2 Herzogs Make Resorters Semis, But Woodhull Upsets DC Stephanie Herzog

August 2, 2019 | 6 min.

ALEXANDRIA -- Herzogs made up 37.5 percent of the quarterfinals in the Championship Flight of the Women's Division at the 98th Resorters, and they will be 50 percent of the semifinals on Friday. But defending champion and top-seeded Stephanie Herzog is gone. Amanda Woodhull, a nurse practitioner who played college golf for Gustavus Adolphus (and has a Masters Degree from Duke), has demonstrated that she can still play the game at a high level this week, and on Thursday she defeated Herzog 1 up at Alexandria Golf Club.

Herzog, a former Minnesota Ms. Golf (an award given each year to the best high school senior girl) and a soon-to-be junior at the University of Iowa, leveled the quarterfinal match with a par at the ninth hole. But Woodhull, the No. 8 seed, reclaimed the lead with a par at the 10th, and she went 2 up with a birdie at the par-5 12th. Herzog won the 15th with a par, and after the 16th and 17th were halved, she birdied the 18th -- but Woodhull matched her birdie to secure the victory.

As a result, she will be taking on another Herzog in the semifinals. This one is Stephanie's sister, Leah Herzog, the 2019 Minnesota Ms. Golf -- and Nebraska recruit -- from Red Wing (she was 40 under par for the high school season this spring). Leah, the No. 5 seed, earned her place in the semis with a 7&5 victory over No. 4 Amanda Bigger. Leah bogeyed the first hole, then won the next five in a row, four of them with birdies. She was 4 up at the turn, added to her lead with two more birdies at the 11th and 12th, and closed Bigger out by winning the par-3 13th with a par.

Neither of the matches in the bottom half of the draw made it to the 16th tee, either. Alexis Guggisberg, who closed out her college career at North Dakota in 2017, got off to a fast start in against Wichita State assistant coach Alejandra Arellano, the No. 2 seed, winning the first three holes, two of them with birdies, and the 10th-seeded Guggisberg never let up on the way to a 6&5 triumph.

Representing the Detroit Lakes branch of the Herzogs is No. 3 seed Madison, who will be a sophomore at Nortth Dakota State this fall. Madison Herzog did most of her best work on the back nine Thursday as she beat Minnesota sophomore-to-be Alayna Eldred 4&3. Just 1 up at the turn, Herzog won the 11th with a birdie, the 13th with a par and the 14th with another birdie to go 4 up.

As for the Championship Flight in the Men's Division, a lot of the big names are still alive after Thursday's Round of 16, including defending champ and No. 1 seed, Brian Choe. He beat Jacob Kelber 6&4. Choe, a soon-to-be sophomore at Kansas State, won the second hole, only to lose the third to a par and the fourth to Kelber's birdie, but he responded with birdies of his own at the fifth and par-5 sixth, made another birdie at the eighth and won the ninth with a bogey, which put him 3 up.

The 10th and 11th were halved with pars, but Choe won the 12th with a birdie and the next two holes with pars, and that was that.

The biggest name to depart on Thursday was No. 2 seed Ben Sigel, who lost what was probably the best match of the day, 1 down to No. 18 Cecil Belisle. This was a match between state high school champs. Sigel, who won the Class AAA tournament as a junior at Minnetonka, was Mr. Golf the next year, 2017. He's at Kansas now, and he concluded his sophomore season this spring at the NCAA regionals. He was the medalist in the Resorters qualifying this week with a 36-hole total of 137 (68-69).

Belisle is a two-time state high school champ. He won the AA title for the first time two years ago, came close to winning again last year (he finished third, two shots out of first) and then reclaimed the title this year to cap off his senior year at Red Wing. He will be a freshman at Minnesota State (Mankato) this fall.

Belisle and Sigel traded the lead back and forth on the front nine, which ended with the match all square. Beliisle went 2 up by winning the 11th and 12th, but Sigel won the 13th and he won the 17th to pull even. On the first extra hole, he hit his drive into the left rough, and Belisle was able to win the hole -- and the match -- with a par.

Going into the Round of 16, there were five players remaining who haven't started college yet. Only two of them got through to the quarterfinals. And they will be playing each other on Friday, because the other one besides Belisle is his quarterfinal opponent, No. 10 Noah Boraaas, a recent Alexandria High School graduate and South Dakota recruit. He won 4&2 over Cade Montplaisir, the No. 26 seed. Montplaisir had sprung a major upset in the Round of 32 by beating Andrew Israelson, last year's Resorters medalist and the No. 7 seed this year.

Thomas Lehman, a recent graduate of Cal Poly, lost leads three times in the first 11 holes, but he pulled ahead for good with an eagle at the 12th hole, and he won three of the next four holes with par in a 3&2 victory over Will Freeman.
