2nd Stage web.com Q-School: Simsby Is Medalist; White Ties for 47th

November 21, 2014 | 2 min.

MURRIETA, Calif. -- There wasn't much of a contest for medalist honors in the Second Stage of web.com Qualifying event at Bear Creek Golf Club on Friday. By the time he got to the turn, Trevor Simsby was 10 strokes ahead. So it didn't matter that he bogeyed four of the last six holes. His 1-under-par 71 gave him a 72-hole tab of 276, which translated into a four-stroke victory for the former University of Washington star.

J.R. Myers made five birdies in a row (No. 9 through No. 13) on the way to a 67, which moved him up to second place with a 280.

Then came Ryan Yip. You have to wonder how having a name like that would affect your putting, but it doesn't seem to bother him. He closed with a 68 for a 283 and third place.

Chris Naegel was fourth, after shooting 74 and posting a 284, and beyond him, things got a little crowded on the scoreboard.

There were 23 players jostling around between 285 and 290, trying to be among the top 18 finishers and ties, because that was what it took to advance to the Final Stage of Q-School.

As it turned out, five players -- Brian Prouty, Kevin Penner, Tain Lee, Chris Gilman and Rak Cho -- tied for 14th place at 288 and got the last available spots. Three guys finished at 289 and missed by one. Another five missed by two.

Cameron White missed by eight. The former Wayzata High School star caddied for another former Trojan golfer, Tim Herron, at Hazeltine National during the 2002 PGA and decided then that he wanted to play on the PGA Tour some day. But he'll have to wait another year for a crack at the web.com Tour, which is the stepping stone to the Big Tour. White shot 76 in the final round, which put him at 296 and in a tie for 47th place.

The six-day, 108-hole Final Stage of Q-School will be played on the Champion and Fazio courses at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., beginning Dec. 11. From that tournament, the top 45 players will be fully exempt for at least the first part of the 2015 web.com season. The higher a player finishes, the longer he will be fully exempt, and the less he will have to worry about re-shuffles.
