WILLMAR, Minn. – A 6-under par 66 by Justin Burleson to open the 2017 Midwest Cup helped both Burleson and Team Minnesota to the top of the leaderboard following the first round of competition Friday at Eagle Creek Golf Club.

Danny Anderson fired a 4-under par 68 on his home course Friday, while Joe Conzemius added a round of 69 to boost Team Minnesota to an eight-point advantage over Missouri after the first 18 holes of play.

The Midwest Cup is an eight-team competition that also recognizes the individual medalist for the 54-hole event. The tournament was first played in 2006 and rotates locations each year among each of the eight states involved. The event represents the best Mid-Amateur golfers in the midwest with invitations based on the player points list provided by each state golf association.

Burleson, Valleywood Golf Course, carded an eagle on his first hole of the championship Friday and followed it by carding birdie at the second to quickly jump to 3-under for the day.

He would card a second eagle at the par-5 fourth before giving back a stroke with a bogey at the fifth. The runner-up at both the Minnesota Golf Association Mid-Players’ and Players’ Championships in June, Burleson turned at 5-under once again after sinking birdie at the par-4 seventh.

Converting birdie at the short, 258-yard 11th, Burleson moved to 6-under before slipping at the 12th by taking bogey. Rolling in his fourth birdie of the round at the 14th, Burleson would finish the day at 6-under par 66 to take a one-shot lead to Saturday’s second round over Missouri’s Brian Haskell.

Anderson, who teamed up with Jacobson to win the Minnesota Public Golf Association Match Four-Ball Championship in bitter conditions at Rum River Hills in late May, played his front nine at even par Friday before heating up on his back nine, rolling in four birdies, including one on his final hole, to shoot 68 and finish the opening 18 in third place, two shots back.

Team Minnesota won the 2012 event at Hastings Country Club and hoisted the trophy again two years later at Firekeeper Golf Course in Mayetta, Kan.

Minnesotan Mike Fiedler is the defending champion, posting a 1-under par 212 to earn a one-stroke victory at St. Joseph Country Club in Missouri. Leif Carlson claimed the Senior Division individual title at the 2012 championship.

The 2017 Midwest Cup continues with the second round Saturday at Eagle Creek Golf Club.
