McCauley Ties for Big Ten Individual Title; Gophers Are 9th as a Team
April 22, 2024
HOUSTON -- Trailing by eight going into the final round, New York University shot a record-tying 294 (6 over par) on Friday at Bay Oaks Country Club, and the result was a five-stroke victory in the Women's NCAA Division III Championships.
The 294 matched the record set by Rhodes College in 2016. NYU's winning four-day total of 1217 was two off the record.
Williams College, which led going into the last day, closed with a 307 and finished second at 1222. Methodist University was another 10 behind in third place at 1232, and Claremont Mudd Scripps finished fourth at 1233.
Arshia Mahant, a freshman, led the charge for NYU. After opening the tournament with an 82 on Tuesday, she bounced back with a 71 and a 75. On Friday, she made five birdies in the first 10 holes and closed with a 69 (one off the record). That was nearly good enough to claim medalist honors, but she ended up one stroke behind Cordelia Chan of Williams.
Chan, a senior from Windsor, Ontario, held off Mahant with a 72, which gave her a 72-hole aggregate of 296. Mahant finished with a 297. Emily Salamy of Rhodes led after 54 holes, but she shot 75 on Friday and wound up in third at 298.
Carleton College, the MIAC champion, tied George Fox University for seventh in the team competition with an overall 1249, just two shots behind fifth-place DePauw. It was the third consecutive top-7 finish for the Knights, who were seventh in 2017 and sixth last year.
The Knights' Ziyi Wang, a senior from Bejing City, China, matched her team's seventh-place finish. She was near the top of the individual leaderboard for the entire tournament, trailing Salamy by only three strokes after three rounds. She shot a final-round 77 and ended up at 303.
