Fiddle and Heck Claim MEA Fall Classic Titles

  EDINA, Minn. – Mason Fiddle fired a 3-over par 75 during the final round of the 2014 Boys MEA Fall Classic Friday to win the championship by one stroke at 152 at Edina Country Club.

Fiddle, Hugo, Minn., opened the tournament with a 5-over par 77 Thursday before posting a tournament-low 77 during the final round, overcoming a two-shot deficit to edge Ben Sigel who finished second at 153.

Fiddle birdied the fifth hole to get to 1-under par before making bogey at the seventh as he would make the turn at even par. With back-to-back bogeys at the 11th and 12th holes, Fiddle fell to 2-over for the day before making a birdie at the 15th.

Another pair of bogeys at the 16th and 17th holes dropped Fiddle to 3-over for the round, which was just enough to win the tournament at 152.

Sigel, Deephaven, Minn., carded a 76 during the opening round Thursday and followed it with a 5-over par 77 during the final round to finish second at 153. Kobi Boe, Edina, Minn., finished third at 154.

On the girls’ side, Anni Heck fired back-to-back rounds of 76 to cruise to an 11-stroke victory at 8-over par 152.

Heck, Eagan, Minn., began the final round with four bogeys through seven holes before making birdie at the ninth to make the turn at 3-over for the round.

Heck carded a pair of bogeys over the final nine holes to earn a convincing victory over Emma Groom, who finished second at 163.

Groom, Eden Prairie, Minn., fired a 12-over par 84 to open the tournament before responding with a 7-over par 79 during Friday’s final round to finish second, 11 strokes back.

Ellie Brandt, Medina, Minn., finished third at 172 after an 89 during the opening round and an 11-over par 83 on the final day.
