Flanagan and Johnson Push Gopher Men to 11th-Place Finish in Georgia

  STATESBORO, Ga. – Posting a final-round team score of 291 Sunday, the University of Minnesota men’s golf team moved up the leaderboard  one spot from the previous day to finish tied for 11th at the 2018 Schenkel Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club.
 
The Gophers’ best round of the championship came during the second round Saturday, combining for an 8-under par 280, but Minnesota was unable to make up any ground on the field, remaining in 12th place following 36 holes of play.
 
A team score of 291 Sunday put the Gophers into a tie with the University of Alabama-Birmingham at 3-over par 867 and 32 shots back of the champions from Vanderbilt University at 29-under par 835.
 
Leading the charge for Minnesota once again was freshman Angus Flanagan, who posted a 2-over par 74 during the opening round Friday, but bounced back by shooting 2-under par 70 during the second round Saturday. Flanagan’s final-round 74 put him into a tie for 43rd along with teammate Riley Johnson at 2-over par 218.
 
Johnson, a senior from Fargo, N.D., posted the Gophers’ best round of the tournament Sunday, shooting 3-under par 69 to jump up 27 spots on the leaderboard following rounds of 75 and 74, respectively.
 
Senior Runar Arnorsson finished tied for 48th at 3-over par 219, while sophomore Thomas Longbella carded a final-round 1-over par 73 Sunday to finish tied for 52nd at 220.
 
Vanderbilt earned a wire-to-wire victory Sunday, firing a team score of 282 during the final round to notch an eight-stroke victory over Georgia Southern University.
 
The Commodores’ Theo Humphrey also claimed a wire-to-wire win after pacing the field with a 13-under par 203 to earn a two-shot victory over a trio of players. Humphrey’s tournament was highlighted by his opening-round 66 to take the early lead Friday.
 
The Gophers travel west to compete in the The Goodwin March 29 at Stanford University Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif.
