Flanagan's 65 Leads Big Ten; Gophers Are Tied for 2nd

April 27, 2019 | 2 min.

FLOURTOWN, Pa. -- Minnesota's Angus Flanagan eagled his second hole of the day (No. 12) and birdied three of the four par-3's Friday at the Philadelphia Cricket Club's Wissahickon Course in the first round of the 2019 Big Ten Conference Championships. The sophomore from England capped off his day with a birdie at the 172-yard, par-3 10th hole for a 5-under-par 65.

That gave him a three-stroke lead one-third of the way through the tournament.

It also helped the Gophers match defending champion Illinois with a total of 287 (four of five scores count). Minnesota and Illinois are tied for second place, five strokes behind the leader, Purdue (282). Michigan State and Rutgers are nine behind, tied for fourth at 291. After that, it gets really crowded. Five more teams are within five shots of fourth place, and Wisconsin, which is last in the 14-team conference (never mind the name "Big Ten"), is within 20 strokes of first.

Purdue has three players in the top seven of the individual standings. Jarie Volden is alone in second at 68. His teammate Timmy Hildebrand is tied for third at 69, along with Chrstopher Gotterup of Ohio State. Purdue's Joe Weller is tied for fifth at even-par 70.

After Flanagan, Minnesota has three players tied for 28th at 74 -- junior Thomas Longbella (Chippewa Falls), sophomore Evan Long (New Castle, Pa.) and freshman Lincoln Johnson (Chaska).

Illinois is trying for its fifth consecutive conference championship, and 10th in 11 years. The only other school to have won during that time was Minnesota, which claimed the team title in 2014.
