Gellert's Hot Start Leads to Opening-Round Lead at Minnesota Boy's Junior PGA Championship

  BREEZY POINT, Minn. – Carding seven birdies against three bogeys Thursday at White Birch Golf Course, Leo Gellert posted an opening-round 68 to take a two-stroke lead to open the 2018 Minnesota Boys’ Junior PGA Championship.
 
Gellert, from North Mankato, Minn., will enter Friday’s final round two shots ahead of William Frazier when the tournament shifts to Deacon’s Lodge.
 
Rolling in five birdies over his first six holes, Gellert quickly jumped to the top of the leaderboard Thursday at 5-under par, but would finish his opening nine with a pair of bogeys to fall back to 3-under.
 
Converting his birdie chance at the 11^th, Gellert moved back to 4-under but took a step back with his third bogey of the round at the par-4 16^th. Finishing his opening round on a high note, Gellert rolled in his birdie putt on the final hole to pace the field at 4-under par 68.
 
The top two finishers to the 2018 Minnesota Boys’ Junior PGA Championship will earn a spot in the national championship July 31-August 3 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.
 
The final round of the 2018 Minnesota Boys’ Junior PGA Championship is slated to begin at 7:30 a.m. Friday at Deacon’s Lodge Golf Course.
