OPELIKA, Ala. – The University of Minnesota men’s golf team bettered its team score by eight strokes from the previous round Monday, failing to make up any ground on the field to remain in seventh place after two rounds of play at the 2018 Tiger Invitational at the Lakes Course at Grand National.

Senior Riley Johnson and sophomore Thomas Longbella paced the Gophers during Day Two of the championship Monday as both players carded rounds of 2-under par 70. After 36 holes, Longbella is tied for 19th at 145 along with teammate Angus Flanagan, who erased a 4-under par front nine Monday by shooting 4-over on the back with a pair of bogeys and a double.

Johnson bounced back from an opening round of 4-over par 76 Sunday and now sits tied for 27th at 146. Fellow senior Runar Arnorsson slipped down the leaderboard Monday with a 3-over par 76 after posting a 73 to open the championship Sunday.

Host school Auburn University, ranked No. 9 by golfstat.com, increased its lead from the opening day of competition and will now take a 14-shot lead over the University of Maryland with 18 holes to play on Tuesday.

The Terrapins are led by David Kocher who posted a 3-under par 69 Monday and will take a two-stroke lead over Auburn’s Wells Padgett ahead of Tuesday’s final round.

The 2018 Tiger Invitational concludes Tuesday as the final round is slated to begin at 7:40 a.m. at the Lakes Course at Grand National.
