Gopher Women Finish Ninth at Minnesota Invite; MSU's Burnham Ties for Seventh

  WOODBURY, Minn. – The University of Minnesota women’s golf team posted a team score of 297 Tuesday to finish the 2017 Minnesota Invitational in ninth place at Prestwick Golf Club.

The Gophers were led by junior Muyu Wu who collected her second top-20 finish, tying for 17th at 2-under par 214. Wu, Hangzhou, China, opened the championship with a 72 before posting a 3-under par 69 during Monday’s afternoon session. She finished by shooting 73 during the final round.

Senior Sabrine Garrison carded a final-round 74 to finish in a tie for 39th at 220, along with freshman Katie Lillie, who made her collegiate debut this week.

Another Gopher newcomer Grace Kellar began her college career by shooting 1-under par 71 to lead Minnesota during the opening round. She would go on to card rounds of 73 and 78, respectively to finish the championship tied for 46th at 222.

The University of Southern California posted a team score of 280 on the final day Tuesday to claim a nine-stroke victory over Michigan State University. The Trojans opened with a team score of 282 during Monday’s morning session, but tallied a tournament-low 276 in the afternoon to lead the field after 36 holes.

Purdue University’s Inez Wanamarta fired a final-round 67 to earn a share of medalist honors at 10-under par 206 along with USC sophomore Muni He. Michigan State senior and former Wayzata High School standout Sarah Burnham notched a top-10 finish, firing a 6-under par 210, highlighted by Monday’s second round score of 6-under par 66.

The Gopher women opened the 2017-18 season Saturday with a match play dual against Michigan State at Spring Hill Golf Club. The Spartans defeated the Gophers, 4½-1½.

Minnesota travels to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho Sept. 26-27 to compete in the Coeur d’Alene Collegiate Invitational at Coeur d’Alene Resort.
