FARIBAULT, Minn. – With six consecutive wins already to her credit, Leigh Klasse defeated Cathy White during her opening match of the 2018 Minnesota Golf Association Women’s Senior Amateur Match Play Championship at Faribault Golf Club.

Klasse, who finished second to Brenda Williams in 2011 at The Jewel Golf Club, has claimed top honors in each of the following six seasons, including a victory over Lynn Anderson, 4 and 3, a year ago at Bent Creek Golf Club.

Klasse and White each birdied the second hole before Klasse took a 2-up by a pair of miscues by White at the third and fifth holes. Rolling in birdie at the par-4 sixth, Klasse extended her lead to 3-under and would take a commanding 6-up lead after White carded bogey on the final three holes of the front nine.

Taking advantage of a White bogey at the 10th, Klasse would close out the match at the 13th following a bogey by White to advance to the semifinals Tuesday and will face Betsy Aldrich, who edged Alison Hurley, 2 and 1, during the opening round.

Williams, who started her match with Bernie Brown on the 10th hole Monday, took a 1-up lead following a birdie at the par-5 15th before Brown made bogey at the 18th to give Williams a 2-up lead with nine to play.

Brown rolled in birdie at the first hole to cut into Williams’ lead, but Williams would play her final nine holes at 2-over par to earn a 3 and 1 victory to advance to the semifinals against Lynn Anderson Tuesday.

Anderson faced Jacqueline Santopietro to open the championship Monday, and both players came out swinging by making birdie on the opening hole before three double-bogeys by Santopietro helped Anderson to a 4-up lead through nine holes.

Santopietro won the first two holes to begin the back nine to cut Anderson’s lead in half, but with a pair of bogeys by Santopietro at the 15th and 16th holes, Anderson closed out the match with a victory, 4 and 2.

The semifinal round of the 2018 MGA Women’s Senior Amateur Match Play Championship is slated to begin at 8 a.m. at Faribault Golf Club.
