Klasse Headed to Match Play for Eighth Time at U.S. Senior Women's Amateur; Williams Misses Cut by Five

September 10, 2017 | 2 min.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Minnesota Golf Hall of Famer Leigh Klasse earned a trip to her eighth consecutive U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship last month and after finishing the first two rounds of stroke play at 155 Sunday at Waverley Country Club, she has now advanced to match play in each of her eight appearances.

Klasse, who now lives in Cumberland, Wis., got off to a shaky start Saturday by posting six bogeys over her opening nine before finding her rhythm over the final nine, recording five consecutive pars before taking back-to-back bogeys to finish her round at 8-over par 80.

Carding two bogeys during her opening nine Sunday, Klasse turned at 10-over for the championship and would roll in one birdie with two bogeys over the final nine to finish tied for 17th at 155.

Klasse will be seeded No. 21 when the match play portion of the championship gets underway Monday and faces Canadian Sandra Turbide to open the Round of 64. Her match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

First eligible for the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur in 2010, Klasse had her best finishes in 2011 and 2012 when she advanced to the Round of 16. She’s been unable to get past the first round of match play in each of the past three seasons.

Fellow Minnesotan Brenda Williams, of Minnetrista, posted an opening-round 86 Saturday and closed out stroke play Sunday with a round of 82 to miss the cut by five strokes. Prior to her appearance this week at the national event, Williams qualified for four straight championships beginning in 2010, advancing to the Round of 32 in 2011.

The 2017 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship continues Monday with the Round of 64 scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. at Waverley Country Club.
