Luhman and Snyder in Front Early at MGA Senior Four-Ball in Northfield

  NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Pacing the field thanks to a pair of birdies and an eagle over their final nine holes Wednesday, the twosome of Tim Luhman and Robert Snyder fired a 6-under par 66 to take a one-stroke lead following the opening round of the 45th Minnesota Golf Association Senior Amateur Four-Ball Championship at Northfield Golf Club.
 
The team of Greg Buckingham and Bob Neuberger played their opening nine at 3-under par before carding a two more birdies over the final nine holes to post a 5-under par 67 Wednesday and will enter Thursday’s final round in second place, one shot off the lead.
 
Luhman and Snyder, both from Cannon Golf Club, started the championship on the 10th tee Wednesday and quickly dipped into red figures when Snyder sank his birdie look at the par-5 12th. Luhman capitalized on his birdie opportunity and the 18th and the two would head to their back nine at 2-under for the round.
 
Both Luhman and Snyder carded eagles at the 464-yard, par-5 first hole to quickly move to 4-under before Luhman sank birdie chances at the third and fifth holes to put the twosome at 6-under for the championship.
 
Neuberger, from Rush Creek Golf Club, carded eagle on his opening hole to give him and partner Buckingham a quick boost, moving to 2-under before the two dropped a stroke at the third with bogeys. The two both bounced back by sinking birdie at the fourth and Buckingham would put his team at 3-under with a birdie at the sixth.
 
Buckingham, from Edinburgh USA, and Neuberger both failed to get up-and-down at the par-3 seventh hole to fall back to 2-under before Buckingham sank his birdie look at the ninth to turn at 2-under once again.
 
The twosome both carded birdie at the 12th, while Neuberger added one final birdie on the ensuing hole to put the two at 5-under for the championship, one shot off the lead in second place following the opening round of play.
 
Bruce Hegland and Scott Hogan, both from Cannon Golf Club, fired a 4-under par 68 to begin the championship Wednesday and will begin Thursday’s final round in a share of third place with the team of Gary Huber and Terry Moores.
 
The 45th MGA Senior Amateur Four-Ball Championship concludes Thursday with final-round tee times beginning at 8 a.m. at Northfield Golf Club.
