Mendez Tied for Third at Royal Oaks Intercollegiate, Gophers Tenth

  HOUSTON – The University of Minnesota men’s golf team carded a 754 during the first two rounds of the 2014 Royal Oaks Intercollegiate Monday and sit in tenth place at Royal Oaks Country Club.

Sophomore Jose Mendez paced the Gophers during the first two rounds as Mendez carded a 2-over par 73 during Monday’s morning session before answering with a 3-under par 68 to finish the opening rounds tied for third at 141.

Mendez, San Jose, Costa Rica, carded 16 pars with two bogeys during the opening round to shoot 73 before rolling in five birdies with two bogeys during Monday’s second round to shoot 68 and sits tied for third at 141.

Sophomore Daniel Luftspring sits tied for 58th at 155 heading into Tuesday’s final round, while fellow sophomores Matt Rachey and Grady Meyer finished the first two rounds tied for 67th at 156.

Oklahoma State University carded a 724 Monday and will carry a two-shot lead over Baylor University into the final round Tuesday.

Baylor’s Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen carded rounds of 66 and 70, respectively, to lead the field by three strokes at 139. Texas Tech’s Guillermo Pereira is second at 139, while Mendez and the University of Oklahoma’s Grant Hirshman are tied for third at 141.

The final round of the 2014 Royal Oaks Intercollegiate is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at Royal Oaks Country Club.
