Mendez and Gopher Men Finish Third at Hawkeye Invite

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Minnesota men’s golf team shot a final-round 296 to finish in third place Sunday at the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course.

The Gophers were led by freshman Jose Mendez who finished at 213, good enough for third place, and for the first time this season all five players finished in the top 25.

Mendez, San Jose, Costa Rica, carded a 2-under par 70 during Saturday’s morning round and followed it up with a 5-under par 67 in the afternoon. He would finish the tournament with a 4-over par 76, four strokes behind medalist Steven Ihm from the University of Iowa (209).

Sophomore Jon DuToit played his best golf of the season as he finished tied for 10th place at 217.

DuToit, Chaska, Minn., opened the tournament with a 2-under par 70 during Saturday’s morning session before carding a 1-over par 73 during the afternoon.

DuToit would complete the tournament with a 2-over par 74 Sunday to finish 10th.

University of Kansas' Ben Welle finished tied for seventh Sunday after a 4-over par 76 to open the tournament Saturday morning. Welle carded a 4-under par 68 Saturday afternoon and rounded out the tournament with an even par 72 to finish at 216.

Welle, Moorhead, Minn., was the runner-up at the 2013 Minnesota Golf Association Amateur Championship at Medina Golf and Country Club. In 2012, Welle and DuToit tied for medalist honors in the Class AAA portion of the Minnesota state high school tournament.  

The Gopher men return to action Saturday at the Rutherford Intercollegiate in State College, Pa.
