EUGENE, Ore. – Playing in his second U.S. Senior Amateur Championship this week, Minnesotan Jerry Rose finished the first two rounds of stroke play inside the top-10 before defeated Californian James Camaione, 5 and 3, during the first round of match play Monday at Eugene Country Club.
Rose, originally from Alexandria, Minn., opened the championship with a round of 1-under par 71 Saturday and would shoot a 73 during the second round Sunday to finish in a tie for sixth, advancing to match play for the first time in his two appearances.
Seeded No. 8 for match play, Rose took advantage of early bogeys by Camaione to take a commanding 5-up lead through just nine holes. Camaione birdied the 14th to pull within four of Rose, but the 2017 Minnesota Golf Association Senior Men’s Player of the Year slammed the door shut with a birdie of his own at the par-4 15th to close out the match, 5 and 3.
He will now face Texas’ John Grace (seeded No. 40) when the Round of 32 begins Tuesday at 9:50 a.m. at Eugene Country Club.
Rose downed Leif Carlson to win the 2017 MGA Senior Players’ Championship at St. Cloud Country Club and narrowly missed repeating as champion, falling to David Rehfeldt at Brackett’s Crossing Country Club in June.
John Anderson, the 2016 MGA Senior Men's Player of the Year, posted a second-round 83 Sunday to miss the cut for match play at 14-over par 158, while Kevin Culligan also exited the championship after two rounds, shooting 162.
