Schommer and Tylke Claim Victory After Weather Washes Out Final Round of MPGA Four-Ball

ANNANDALE, Minn. – Combining for five birdies to shoot a 5-under par 67 during their opening round of the 2019 Minnesota Public Golf Association Four-Ball Championship Saturday, the twosome of Corey Schommer and Max Tylke were declared the champions by a scorecard playoff after weather shortened the championship to 18 holes.

Schommer and Tylke finished the opening round in a tie for the lead with brothers Jake and Matt Witham before tournament officials determined late Saturday that a final round Sunday was unlikely due to weather and unplayable course conditions.

Tylke carded three birdies on the front nine Saturday before Schommer rolled in his birdie chance at the 13th to move the pair to 4-under for the round. Tylke’s fourth birdie of the round on the final hole put the twosome into the clubhouse with a share of the lead at 67.

Saturday’s victory is the fourth amateur victory for Tylke, who most recently won the 2018 MPGA Public Links Championship with a flurry of late birdies, claiming a three-stroke victory at Riverwood National Golf Club.

Tylke teamed up with Alexandra Stewart to win the Minnesota Golf Association Mixed Amateur Team Championship in 2017 at Chaska Town Course. In 2016 Tylke claimed his first MPGA Public Links Championship after winning his first amateur victory at the Minnesota Jr. PGA Championship in 2011.

Schommer collects his first state victory Saturday, with his previous best finish coming at the 2018 MGA Mid-Players’ Championship, where he advanced to the Round of 16.

The brothers Witham got off to a quick start Saturday by carding an eagle on their second hole of the tournament and added three more birdies on the front nine to turn at 5-under. The twosome moved into the lead with a birdie at the par-4 17th, but both players would take bogey on the final hole to drop back to 5-under for the championship.

Adam Arola and Ralph Baxley combined to shoot 4-under par 68 Saturday, finishing in a four-way tie for third place along with the team of Kane Bauer and Jon Holmes, the twosome of Justin Burleson and Jesse Larson and the pairing of Will Hickey and Jesse Polk.
