Johnson Wins Individual Title, and NDSU Wins the Team at Torrey Pines

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Jeff Sorenson claimed his 100th victory as a professional last week, and did it in dramatic fashion.
The four-time Minnesota PGA Player of the Year chipped in for an eagle on the 17th hole in the final round of Event 4 in the 2014 PGA Tournament Series. That was the difference, as he closed with a 5-under-par 67 on the Ryder Course at PGA Golf Club and finished one stroke clear of the field with a 36-hole total of 135.
There was a four-way tie for second that included first-round leader Ben Polland. A 2008 graduate of Bloomington Jefferson, Polland is now an assistant at Deepdale GC in Manhasset, N.Y., and he opened Event 4 with a 65. But he could do no better than a 71 in the second round, and wound up tied with Mark Faulkner, Mark Brown and Bob Sowards at 136.
For Sorenson, pushing his victory total into triple figures was worth $5,000.
Earlier in the week, the 36-year-old teaching pro at Columbia GC had finished second in Event 3, one behind Sowards, and he had done the same thing the previous week, losing by one to Sowards in Event 2.
All of which is pretty impressive for someone who was confined to a bed for part of the summer, after suffering a herniated disc. Sorenson had the same kind of back surgery that Tiger Woods underwent this year, a microdiscectomy, and was sidelined for more than two months as a result.
