St. Thomas Rallies to Edge Carleton at Northfield GC

April 28, 2015 | 5 min.

NORTHFIELD -- The University of St. Thomas, having had its share of second-place finishes, came from one stroke behind on the final day to win the Carleton Invitational by one on Sunday.

It was the first victory of the 2014-15 season for the Tommies, who had three runner-up finishes in a row during one stretch last fall.

Britt McNett-Emmerich of Wisconsin-Stout was the medalist. The senior from Madison closed with an even-par 72 at Northfield Golf Club, which gave her a tournament-record 36-hole total of 149 and a five-stroke victory.

St. Thomas freshman Megan McCorkle followed first-round 76 with a 78 to claim second place in the individual competition. Carleton sophomore Shannon Holden shot a 2-under 34 on her final nine, and that gave her a 76 on Sunday, which earned her a share of third at 155, along with another St. Thomas golfer, Emily Thul, and Jordy Drenttel of Gustavus Adolphus.

The Tommies put together a 324 on Saturday, but came back with a 319 to finish a 623 and edge the host Knights, who shot 321 for an aggregate of 644. Gustavus was another three back at 647, in third, and Stout finished fourth with a 652.

St. Thomas will be at Eau Claire for the BluGold Spring Invitational next weekend. So will Carleton, which will use that tournament as a tune-up for the NCAA Division III Championships, May 12-15 at Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The Knights earned an automatic invitation to the NCAA by winning their first MIAC team championship last October.
