CAREFREE, Ariz. – Behind impressive performances from freshman Angus Flanagan and junior Peter Jones, the University of Minnesota men’s golf team posted a team score of 8-over par 872 to finish in sixth place at the 2017 Maui Jim Intercollegiate at Desert Forest Golf Club.

Playing in just his second collegiate event, Flanagan opened the championship by firing a 1-over par 73 Friday and came back with a round of 2-under 70 during the second round Sunday.

Flanagan, of Woking, England, rolled in a pair of birdies on his front nine Sunday and carded two more birdies on the back with one bogey to card a final-round 69 to notch the first top-5 finish of his young career at 4-under par 212.

An Owatonna, Minn., native, Jones began the tournament by carding back-to-back rounds of 72 before posting a 2-under par 34 during his front nine Sunday, including three birdies, three bogeys and an eagle before rolling in two more birdies and taking one bogey over the final nine holes. He would finish the day with a 3-under par 69 to place tied for sixth at 213.

Alex Del Rey Gonzalez led Arizona State University to a one-stroke victory for the team title Sunday as the Sun Devils edged Georgia Tech by one stroke by firing a team score of 7-under par 857.

Gonzalez earned medalist honors by three strokes Sunday, in large part to his tournament-low round of 65 to finish with a 54-hole total of 10-under 206.

The Gopher men return to action Oct. 9-10 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at The Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif.
