Warian Is Medalist & Gophers Are Team Champs at Highland Meadows
April 16, 2024
Chris Baker was in an enviable position at the start of Friday's final round in the Second Stage of web.com Qualifying in Plantation Fla. Having posted a pair of 68's and a 64, he was leading the field of 80 pros, mostly young, who hope to use the web.com as a springboard to the PGA Tour. He could have shot 80 and still earned a spot in the Final Stage, which will be played at PGA National (the Fazio and Champion courses) in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. in three weeks.
Instead, Baker shot a 9-under-par 62 at Plantation Preserve Golf Course & Club and was the medalist by nine strokes.
So he and the next 23 finishers (the top 21 and ties advanced) will go on to PGA National. Everyone who makes it to the Final Stage will have at least some status on the 2015 web.com Tour.
The goal for all of these guys is to get full status on the web.com and then finish in the top 25 on the money list. That would be worth a promotion to the PGA Tour for the 2016-17 season.
Baker, who turned professional in 2008, gained partial status on the web.com in 2011 (when it was called the Nationwide Tour), but played in only 13 tournaments. He was back out there in 2014, playing in 21 events, and in 2015, playing 15. But he has never finished higher than No. 101 on the money list. Which is why he's back at Q-School again this year.
The 29-year-old Iowa State graduate got right down to business Friday. He hadn't exactly distinguished himself on the first hole, a 589-yard par-5 that he played in 2 over during the first three rounds (par, double bogey, par), but he birdied it to start his final round. He added three more birdies on the front nine and five on the back on the way to his first bogey-free round of the week.
He concluded 72 holes with an aggregate of 262 (22 under). Charles Wang was a distant second, closing with a 70 to finish at 271. Lucas Kim was another two strokes back at 273, in third place.
There was one player from Minnesota playing at Plantation. Ben Polland, a 2008 Bloomington Jefferson graduate is now a club pro at a ritzy course in New York. He made news this summer by nearly winning the PGA Professional National (the Club Pro) Championship. But he got off to a less-than-stellar start on Tuesday, opening with a 75. His second round wasn't a lot better, a 73, and even though he played pretty well the last two days (68-70), it wasn't good enough.
His total of 286 was five too many.
The last of the five Second State tournaments (three last week, two this week) was contested in Beaumont, Calif., at Oak Valley Golf Club.
Jimmy Gunn and Xander Schauffele were the co-medalists with a couple of 275's (13 under), and Brian Campbell shot the best score of the day, a 6-under 66, to claim third at 276.
It took 285 (five guys tied for 21st at that number) to make it out of Beaumont and into the Final Stage.
Among the casualties was Joe Afrunti, a former Chicago District Amateur champ who was on the University of Minnesota's national championship team in 2002, although he didn't play in the NCAA that year. Affrunti then transferred to Illinois, where he was a regular in the Illini line-up, and after turning pro in 2004, he gradually worked his way up the ladder -- to the Nationwide/web.com and then to the PGA Tour, although his status on the Big Tour was limited (he has never played more than six tournaments in a single season).
Unfortunately, he lost his status on the PGA Tour and the web.com, and he's going to have to wait at least another year to get it back, because he withdrew from the Second Stage of Q-School on Thursday after three rounds (72-73-73--218).
