The United States Golf Association – or USGA – conducts thirteen national championships annually.  Of course, the most well-known of these is the US Open.  Minnesota has a rich history in the annals of the US Open, having first hosted the Open in 1916 at The Minikahda Club, when Chick Evans claimed the title playing with only seven clubs.

This, of course, is what started the “Evans Scholarship” program that has since sent thousands of caddies to college.  The last Open was contested at Hazeltine National Golf Club in 1991 when Payne Stewart defeated Scott Simpson in a playoff.

In addition to the Open, the USGA hosts two other Open championships (Women’s and Senior) as well as ten “amateur-only” championships.  Again, Minnesota figures prominently in the history of these events, having hosted over 25 individual championships in addition to the Walker Cup, Curtis Cup and USGA State Team Championships.  In fact, Minnesota is the only state to have hosted

every USGA championship.  The USGA is next scheduled to return to Minikahda and Minnesota in 2017 with the US Senior Amateur Championship.

While some of the players are exempt into the field, the majority of the players making it to the championships proper must go through a qualifying process.  These qualifying events are the responsibility of the many state and regional golf associations throughout the country.  There are approximately sixteen qualifying events annually in Minnesota.

The responsibility for conducting the qualifying events in Minnesota is spread between the MGA and the various USGA Committee representatives.
