A Bogey on Second Playoff Hole Ousts Schmitz From U.S. Amateur in Michigan

  BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. – With a bogey on the second playoff hole early Wednesday, Minnesotan Sammy Schmitz has been eliminated from competition at the 2016 U.S. Amateur Championship at Oakland Hills Country Club.

Schmitz, Farmington, Minn., finished the first two rounds of stroke play tied for 57th at 2-over par 142 before faltering in Wednesday’s 23-way playoff for the final eight spots for the match play portion of the tournament.

Following his victory at the 2015 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship in John’s Island, Fla., Schmitz is exempt into the 2017 and 2018 U.S. Amateur Championships, as well as the next 10 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championships.
