A Second-Round 70 Puts Schmitz into a Playoff for Match Play at U.S. Amateur

  BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. – With a round of even par 70 during the second round of the 2016 U.S. Amateur Championship at Oakland Hills Country Club Tuesday, Sammy Schmitz finished in a tie for 57th at 142 and into a 23-way playoff for the final eight spots for the match play portion of the championship.

Schmitz, Farmington, Minn., opened the championship with a 2-over par 72 on the North Course Monday before playing the opening nine on the South Course Tuesday at even par.

The defending U.S. Mid-Amateur champion carded a pair of birdies with two bogeys over the final nine holes Tuesday to finish in a tie for 57th at 142 and now looks become one of 64 players to advance to match play Wednesday.

Jonathan Hanner, Minneapolis, Minn., carded a 5-over par 77 Tuesday on the South Course to finish at 152 and miss the cut for match play by 10 shots, while fellow Minnesotan, Paul Stankey finished at 153 following his final round 76 Tuesday.

Marshall, Minn., native Matt Bennett carded a 77 during the second round of stroke play and would miss the cut at 18-over par 158.

The 23-way playoff for the final eight spots advancing to match play begins at 7 a.m. Wednesday at Oakland Hills Country Club, followed shortly thereafter by the Round of 64.
