APPLE VALLEY, Minn. – Looking to claim his first state victory since the 2006 Twin Cities Championship, Ralph Baxley carded an even par 71 Saturday to take the first-round lead at the 2020 Minnesota Public Golf Association Mid Public Links Championship at Valleywood Golf Course.
Playing his front nine in even par 35 Saturday, Baxley rolled in a pair of birdies against two bogeys during his final nine holes to take a one-stoke lead over 2019 Minnesota Golf Association Men’s Player of the Year winner Trent Peterson and Yarri Bryn, each posting rounds of 1-over par 72.
Baxley claimed a trifecta of top-5 finishes during the 2019 season, finishing tied for second at the MPGA Four-Ball Championship with partner Adam Arola, a tie for second at the Twin Cities Championship and a second-place finish at the MPGA Combination Championship.
During the opening round Saturday, Baxley rolled in an early birdie chance at the fourth, but would take a step back at the par-4 ninth to turn at even par. Unable to save par at the par-3 13th, Baxley bounced back with a pair of birdies at the 15th and 16th holes to get to 1-under for the championship. A late bogey at the 17th managed to put Baxley into the clubhouse lead at 71.
Joel B. Johnson, from the Links at Northfork, and Jesse Larson, Legends Club, both carded rounds of 2-over par 73 Saturday and will begin Sunday’s round two shots off the lead in a tie for third place.
The final round of the 16th MPGA Mid Public Links Championship is slated to begin at 9:30 a.m. at Valleywood Golf Course.
