Anderson Wins Twin Cities Senior Championship for 9th State Victory

LAKEVILLE, Minn. – Bouncing back from a runner-up finish after falling in a playoff to Ray Pontinen at last year’s Twin Cities Championship at Majestic Oaks Golf Club, John Anderson fired a 1-under 70 Tuesday at Brackett’s Crossing Country Club to claim his first state championship since 2009.

Back-to-back birdies at the sixth and seventh holes Tuesday gave Anderson all the help he would need as he carded one bogey over his final 11 holes to earn a two-stroke victory over Paul Schubring, Randy Newman and longtime playing partner Bill Tadewald.

Anderson claimed his first state championship in 2002 at Theodore Wirth Golf Course and followed it up by winning a pair of Minnesota Golf Association Amateur Team Championships and two Minnesota Public Golf Association Combination Championships over the next four seasons.

After winning the MPGA Four-Ball in 2008, Anderson claimed his biggest state victory by winning the Minnesota Senior Open at The Links at Northfork the following year. He finished 2009 with his most recent win at the MPGA State Senior Public Links Championship.

For more than a decade, Anderson has developed into one of the state’s most consistent senior players, claiming 17 top-5 finishes, while qualifying for a pair of U.S. Senior Amateur Championships. In six events in 2016, Anderson never placed worse than 10th, while collecting four top-5's and was named MGA Senior Men's Player of the Year.

Despite a bumpy finish to his round Tuesday, carding a pair of bogeys over his final three holes, Skip Schultz fired a 3-over 74 to earn a one-stroke victory over Dale Speetzen in the Masters Division for his fourth victory over the past five seasons.

Teeing off on the 10th hole Tuesday, Schultz carded three bogeys during his front nine and dropped to 4-over after a bogey at the par-3 second. Schultz found his rhythm shortly after when he carded three consecutive birdies beginning at the par-3 fourth, moving him to 1-over.

A pair of bogeys over his final three holes wasn’t enough to keep Schultz from earning medalist honors for the second straight season in the Masters Division.
