Another 63 Helps Fiedler and Polk Cruise to MPGA Four-Ball Title

October 5, 2020 | 2 min.

MONTICELLO, Minn. – Firing an 8-under par 63 for the second consecutive round Sunday at Monticello Country Club, the twosome of Mike Fiedler and Jesse Polk earned a four-stroke victory at the 43rd Minnesota Public Golf Association Four-Ball Championship, shooting 16-under 126.

Polk and Fiedler held a two-stroke lead following Saturday’s opening round, but started quickly Sunday, each carding birdie on the opening hole before Polk converted his birdie chance at the second.

Fiedler added birdies at the fourth and eighth holes to push the pairing to 12-under for the championship before they would give back a stroke with a bogey at the ninth. Fiedler singlehandedly took control beginning the inward nine, carding five birdies over the final nine holes to help his team to a second round of 63, four shots better than the two some of Justin Burleson and Jesse Larson, as well as the team of brothers Colton and McCabe Buege.

Fiedler claims his first state championship victory since winning the 2017 Minnesota Golf Association Amateur Four-Ball Championship with partner Johnny Larson at Crow River Golf Club.

Teaming up with Andrew McCain in 2015, the twosome won the MPGA Combination Championship at Bunker Hills. Fiedler partnered with Laura Olin to claim the 2006 MGA Mixed Amateur Team Championship at Brackett’s Crossing Country Club.

A Loren Krugel winner in 2005, Fielder’s first state win came in 1999 at the Minnesota PGA Junior Players’ Match Play Championship.

Polk wins his third MPGA Four-Ball in five seasons, claiming the 2016 championship with Sammy Schmitz at Emerald Greens Golf Club before winning again with Schmitz in 2018 at New Richmond Golf Club.

Polk and Schmitz previously paired up to win the 2014 MGA Amateur Four-Ball Championship at Pebble Creek Golf Club, tying a tournament-record with an opening-round 60.

The Buege brothers fired a 4-under 71 to begin the championship Saturday and carded eight birdies in a 12-hole span during the final round Sunday to finish four strokes out of the lead at 12-under par 130

Burleson, who won the MGA Mid-Players’ Championship on Wednesday at Cannon Golf Club, teamed up with Larson to fire a bogey-free 66 Saturday and the two would go bogey-free again during the final round, rolling in four birdies during their outward nine before carding another three birdies to finish the round at 7-under 64 to place tied for second at 130.
