HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -- Emily Israelson of Augustana shot one of the lowest scores of the Women's NCAA Division II Championships on Saturday, and her even-par 72 propelled the junior from Staples-Motley 15 places higher in the standings. She finished in a tie for 13th with a 72-hole total of 310.
No one matched par during the first three rounds of the tournament, but conditions eased slightly on Saturday. The course still wasn't easy. Three players broke par, and Israelson was the only player to shoot 72.
Marie Coors of St. Leo was one of the three. St. Leo didn't make it to the NCAA as a team; so Coors was competing as an individual only, and she made the most of it. Starting the day tied for the lead, she posted a 71, which gave her an aggregate of 295 -- and a two-stroke victory.
There were also two 70's posted on Saturday. Charlotte Puts shot one of them, and it moved her up from third to second in the individual competition, with a cumulative 297. While she was at it, she helped Barry hang on to first place in the team competition and win by a single stroke (1222 to 1223) over Dallas Baptist. Ann Parmerter of Dallas Baptist finished third individually, at 299, after a 75. Her teammate Hanna Harriston was another two behind at 301, tied for fourth.
Harrison tied with Annika Haynes of Indianapolis. It was Haynes who shot the other 70.
Indianapolis finished third in the team standings with a 1232, and was the only other team remotely close to Barry and Dallas Baptist.
Augustana, the perennial Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference champion, qualified for the NCAA tournament by taking second place in the Super Region 3 tournament earlier this month.
