June 15, 2021 | 2 min.

JORDAN, Minn. – In search of the first team title in school history this week, the Lake City High School girls’ golf team posted a team score of 343 Tuesday at Ridges at Sand Creek to open the 2021 Minnesota State Girls’ Class AA championship with a 16-stroke lead.

The Tigers were led by freshman Jordana Windhorst-Knudsen’s 3-over 75 Monday, who finshed the opening round in second place, individually, two shots off the lead.

During her opening round Monday, Windhorst-Knudsen carded a pair of late bogeys during her opening nine to turn in 2-over. She would fall to 5-over following three bogeys in a four-hole span midway through her back nine, but would find her groove late by carding birdies on her final two holes to tally a 3-over 75

Molly Kennedy posted an 89 to finish the first round of play tied for 23rd, while teammate Emma Berge fired a 91 to finish the first 18 holes tied for 28th, helping the Tigers to the top of the leaderboard.

Mallory Belka, a junior from Perham High School, carded a 1-over 73 Tuesday to take the individual lead by two strokes. Playing her front nine at even par, Belka birdied the par-3 11th to get into red figures for the championship. She took two steps back with a double-bogey at the 13th, but bounced back with her third birdie of the round at the 15th.

A bogey at the 16th put Belka into the clubhouse lead by two shots with her 73. As a freshman, Belka finished tied for 16th at the 2019 championship, carding rounds of 85 and 79, respectively.

Fergus Falls posted a first-round 359 to sit 16 shots behind Lake City, while Minnewaska-Brooten-Belgrade-Elrosa will begin the second round in third place, 19 shots off the lead.

Maggie Bahr, a senior from Cannon Falls High School, carded a 6-over 78 Tuesday and will begin the second round in third place, while Minnewaska’s Annika Stensrud and Le Sueur-Henderson High School senior Makenna Reinhardt finished the opening round tied for fourth with a 79.

Tee times for the final round of the 2021 Minnesota State Girls’ Class AA Championship begin at 7:30 a.m. at Ridges at Sand Creek.
