LAKEVILLE, Minn – Gunnar Broin earned medalist honors Tuesday during U.S. Amateur Championship Qualifying at Brackett’s Crossing Country Club in Lakeville, Minn. Broin, who lives in Chanhassen, Minn., and plays at Colorado State, posted rounds of 70-70—140, 2-under par, to punch his ticket to the 121st U.S. Amateur Championship, Aug. 9-15 at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa. Claiming the second qualifying spot was Jeremy Tetrault, of Lino Lakes, with scores of 69-72—141.

“It’s the U.S Amateur, it’s one of the biggest amateur tournaments in the world. I am going to soak everything in and have as much fun as possible,” Broin said.

“Oakmont is going to be awesome, and I am going out there with my whole family so we will all get to experience it together.”

The long qualifying day -- 36 holes -- was initially delayed by weather before the first round began. The field was pulled off the golf course later in the day as potentailly dangerous weather moved through the area. Altogether the delays amonted to 2.5 hours during which the private club near Lakeville recieved approximately .75 inches of rain.

“Coming into today, I knew it was going to be a long day and that we would be on and off the golf course all day. I was trying to be as patient as possible,” Broin said. He did just that, parring his first nine holes of the day. He went on to birdie the 10th and 18th holes to post a 1-under-par 70.

Broin continued his steady play on the second 18 holes, carding two birdies and one bogey for another 1-under 70, and managed to steady his nerves down the stretch, making an 8-foot par putt on the 7th hole (his 16th) of the final round.

“I made back-to-back bogeys on the back nine, flubbing two chips, but after that, I had two key up-and-downs that really made a difference.”

Tetrault also managed the rain delays well, staying patient and occupied.

“I have played in many of these events, and you just have to find something to occupy yourself during the delays. Everyone has to deal with the same thing,” he said.

Tetraults’ experience paid off as he birdied the first hole after the weather delay, when he hit his tee shot to six feet at the 5th.

“That shot really set the tone for the rest of the day. It gave me the confidence I needed to keep my momentum going.”

Tetrault would post a 2-under-par 69 to take a one-shot lead heading into the second 18 holes of the day, where he had two bogeys and one birdie for a 1-over-par 72, 141 total and the second qualifying spot.

“This has a been a lifelong goal of mine. I have told people my whole life that I wanted to qualify for one USGA event and to be able to accomplish that today, means the world to me,” Tetrault said after his round.

After carding identical rounds of 72-70--142, Taylor Sundbom, of Duluth, and Hunter Rebrovich, of Alexandria, played off for the alternate positions, with Sundbom birdieing the second hole to clinch the first alternate spot.
