2024 High School Prep Preview
March 15, 2024
Sarah Burnham sent messages to friends last week saying that she has made her college choice -- and it's Michigan State.
In 2012, Burnham won the Minnesota Women's State Amateur, the Women's State Publinx Stroke Play and locked up the MGA Women's Player of the Year Award before starting her junior year at Wayzata High School. She is the first Girls Junior golfer to win the Women's Player of the Year Award since Hilary Homeyer (Lunke) did it in 1997, and she's the first girl in the 19-year history of the award to win it while still in high school. (Homeyer won the award in the summer between her senior year at Edina and her freshman year at Stanford.)
Although she's already made her college decision, Burnham can't make it official by signing a National Letter of Intent until November, during the Early Signing Period, when she's a senior.
Burnham is the second member of Minnesota's prodigiously talented Class of 2014 to commit to a college. Celia Kuenster, the two-time state Class AAA high school champ from Cretin-Derham -- and the winner of the 2011 Women's State Amateur -- let it be known a couple of months ago that she was committed to Minnesota.
The Class of 2014 is the strongest girls golf class that Minnesota has ever produced, mainly because of three players: Burnham, Kuenster and McKenzie Neisen of New Prague.
Neisen, who has lost a share of the the state AAA high school championship on the last hole each of the last two years and who came within a stroke of winning the Women's State Am last summer (she ended up losing a playoff to Burnham), has given no indication yet of where she might like to go to college.
