Detroit Lakes’ Kate Smith Advances to Round 32 at U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship

ROCKVILLE, Md. (August 6, 2020) – Kate Smith, of Detroit Lakes, Minn., the 15th seed, defeated Louise Yu, of Duluth, Ga., 2 and 1, Thursday during the 120th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at the Woodmont Country Club, in Rockville, Md.

Yu, seeded 50th, was 3-up on Smith through six holes before the recently crowned MGA Women’s Amateur champ battled back winning holes 7 and 9 to make the turn just one down. Smith carded scores of 3-4-3-3 over a stretch of four holes late in the round hammering Yu with birdies on holes 14, 15 and 17, to close the match, 2 and 1.  

The defending champ, Gabriela Ruffels, of Australia, defeated Kajal Mistry, of South Africa, 3 and 2.  

Smith faces Tyler Akabane, of Danville, Calif., Friday at 8:30 a.m. in the Round of 32; the winner advances to the Round of 16 gets underway in the afternoon. The quarter and semifinal matches play Saturday, and the 36-hole final match is Sunday, Aug. 9.
