SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Jon DuToit shot 66 and 64 in the first two rounds and had a one-stroke lead going into the final round of the Dakotas Tour tournament at Bakker Crossing last week. The former Minnesota State Amateur and State Open champion then closed with a 66. When you do that, you're supposed to win, but Parker Edens shot a final round of 6-under-par 65 and defeated DuToit in a playoff to claim first place -- and a check of $15,000.
Edens and DuToit both finished with 54-hole totals of 196, 17 under par.
Drew Preston closed with a 67 to finish in third place, two behind at 198.
Andre Metzger, a Sioux Falls resident in the summer and the leading money winner on the Dakotas Tour so far this year, opened with a 63. He followed that with a 72 but then came back with a 64, which put him at 199, good for fourth.
Thomas Campbell, who like DuToit, played college golf at the University of Minnesota, tied for fifth with an aggregate of 200.
In the final round, DuToit birdied the 541-yard, par-5 second hole at Bakker Crossing, but Edens made an eagle there to pull into a tie for the tournament lead at 13 under. He and DuToit were still tied when then made the turn, Edens in 33 (3 under) and DuToit in 34. They both birdied the 564-yard, par-5 12th hole, before Edens stuck his nose in front with a birdie at the 13th (17r yards, par 3). DuToit regained the lead with an eagle at the 516-yard 16th hole, but Edens forced a playoff by making a birdie at the 349-yard, par-4 18th.
With the $15,000 he made, Edens moved into the No. 3 spot on the Dakota Tour's money list, with $16,123 in four events.
This was the first Dakota Tour event DuToit has played in, and the second-year pro from Chaska (he also won the state high school tournament) is fourth on the money list with $7,000.
Metzger is second, just ahead of Edens, with $16,210 in four tournaments.
Another Sioux Falls resident, Doug Quinones, who missed the cut at Bakker Crossing, is No. 1 with $22,815 in four events.
