Flanagan Named to GB&I Walker Cup Team

March 31, 2021 | 2 min.

Angus Flanagan, a University of Minnesota senior and the reigning Big Ten Conference individual champion, has been named to the Great Britain & Ireland team that will play in the 2021 Walker Cup Matches, May 8-9 at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Fla.

The 21-year-old from Woking, England, was a third-team All-American in 2019, the most recent college golf season to have been completed. (The 2019-20 season ended last March, a result of the Covid 19 pandemic.) During the summer of 2020, Flanagan won the Minnesota State Open and was the medalist at the Western Amateur. In October, he won the Minnesota Golf Champions tournament.

Flanagan is currently No. 47 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, and is the seventh-highest ranked player on the 10-member GB&I team. In his most recent tournament, The Goodwin, played last week at Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif., he finished with a 54-hole total of 2-under-par 212 (69-68-75) and tied for 24th.

He will be the second Gopher to play in the Walker Cup Matches. John Harris was the first. Harris, a nine-time MGA Player of the Year -- and the 1993 U.S. Amateur champion -- played on the U.S. team four times, in 1993, '95, '97 and 2001.

The matches are named after George Herbert Walker, who was the USGA president when the first -- unofficial -- matches in the series were played 100 years ago, in 1921, at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England. Walker was the grandfather of George Herbert Walker Bush, the 41st President of the United States, and great grandfather of George Walker Bush, the 43rd President.

Originally, the matches were played annually. But the format was changed in 1925, and the matches have been contested biennially since then. The U.S. leads the series 37-9-1 and is favored to win again this year.

Flanagan will be busy in early May. He will defend his individual Big 10 crown at the conference tournament, April 30-May 2 at Crooked Stick GC in Carmel, Ind., just before heading for Seminole and the Walker Cup Matches.
