NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Jumping out to an early lead during the first round of play Saturday, the University of Minnesota men’s golf team cruised to a 24-stroke, wire-to-wire victory at the 2019 MacDonald Cup for its first victory since the 2014 Big Ten Championships.
Posting a final-round 281 Sunday, the Gophers fired a 54-hole team total of 830, which is the lowest score since the 2000-01 season.
"I just love to see these guys be rewarded for all their hard work and preparation," first-year Gopher head coach Justin Smith said. "This team has set its mind to raising the bar each and every day. I am so proud of their attitudes, as much as anything."
Angus Flanagan, who won his first collegiate tournament at last year’s Big Ten Championships, led the way again for Minnesota this week, firing a final-round 68 to finish at 6-under 204 to claim medalist honors for his second college victory.
Fellow junior Evan Long began the final round tied for the lead with Flanagan, but would post a 1-over 71 to finish in second place at 3-under 207. Sunday’s final round was the first time that Minnesota had golfers finish first and second in the same tournament since Riley Johnson and Daniel Luftspring at the Dartmouth Dual in 2015.
Freshman Connor Glynn finished tied for fifth at 1-over 211, while senior Thomas Longbella finished seventh at 212. Senior Noah Rasinski placed 13th at 217 and freshman Harrison Arnold finished a 220 as all six Gopher golfers placed inside the top-25.
The Gopher men travel to Vestavia Hills, Ala., Oct. 7-8 to compete at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate at Old Overton Golf Club, hosted by the University of Alabama.
