McCauley Ties for Big Ten Individual Title; Gophers Are 9th as a Team
April 22, 2024
CHASKA, Minn. – Carding a birdie at the 17th hole against five-time champion Don Berry at Chaska Town Course, Thomas Campbell rallied late to even the final match of the 2019 Minnesota PGA Match Play Championship and would prevail in extra holes to claim his first victory at the event.
The year-long championship began in May and Campbell had the daunting task of facing three former champions along the way in Jeff Sorenson, Brent Snyder and Berry—who have combined for 11 Minnesota PGA Match Play wins.
Seeded No. 50 to begin the championship, the former University of Minnesota golfer defeated Tim Johnson before edging Timothy Brovold, 1-up, during the second round. Campbell earned his largest margin of victory during the third round when he ousted Scott McDonald, 3 and 2.
Facing Snyder early Tuesday, Campbell slipped by the two-time champion, 1-up to reach the final match against perennial powerhouse in Berry.
Carding a pair of birdies through six holes, Campbell managed a 2-up lead over Berry before two birdies at the seventh and ninth holes saw Berry even the match heading to the back nine.
Following a bogey by Campbell at the 10th, Berry would take a 2-up lead with a birdie at the 11th before Campbell cut Berry’s lead in half with a birdie at the 13th. The always dangerous Berry regained a 2-up lead with a birdie at the 15th, but Campbell staged a late rally, rolling in birdies at the 16th and 17th holes to even the match and would birdie the first playoff hole to claim the victory.
