Gibson Shoots 67, Wins Playoff to Claim DIII Title; Wittenberg is Team Champ

May 20, 2017 | 3 min.

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -- Josh Gibson finished with a flourish Friday at the 2017 Men's NCAA Division III Championships. Not only did he birdie the 18th hole at Mission Inn & Resort to post the days lowest score, a 5-under-par 67, but the Hope College sophomore then went out and defeated Garrett Brickley in a one-hole playoff to claim medalist honors.

Brickley birdied the last two holes in his round for a 68 and thereby matched Gibson's 54-hole aggregate of 287. His efforts didn't quite earn him the first-place medal, but they helped Wittenberg win the team championship. Wittenberg combined for a 293 on Day 4 of the national small college tournament. That gave them a 74-hole total of 1180.

Guilford finished second, two behind Wittenberg with an 1182.

St. John's remained stuck in 15th place, which was where the ended up on each of the last three days. The low man for the Johnnies was Sam Olson, a junior from Sioux Falls. He closed with a 75 and tied for 16th with an overall 296.
