MAPLE PLAIN, Minn. – The University of Minnesota men’s golf team kicked off the 2019-20 season with a disappointing opening round at the 2019 Gopher Invitational before bouncing back to climb three places on the leaderboard to finish the first day of competition in 10th place Sunday at Windsong Farm.

Posting the highest team total during the first round Sunday, the Gophers fired a team total of 282 and will begin Monday’s final round 20 shots back of the leaders from Baylor University.

Despite shooting a 7-over 78 to open the championship Sunday, Minnesota junior Angus Flanagan tied a career-low during the second round, shooting 65 over his final 18 holes to jump 45 spots on the leaderboard to finish 36 holes tied for 19th at 143.

Flanagan, Woking, England, becomes the fourth player in the program’s history to post multiple rounds of 65 during his career, joining Runar Arnorsson, Bronson La’Cassie and James McLean.

Also finishing tied for 19th Sunday were senior Noah Rasinski, who carded rounds of 69 and 74, respectively, as well as freshman Connor Glynn, who opened the championship with a round of 2-over 73 during his collegiate debut before posting a round of 1-under 70 late Sunday, playing as an individual.

Following the opening round of play early Sunday, Baylor finished five shots behind Texas A&M in second place before shooting a team total of 5-under 279 during Sunday’s afternoon session to leap the Aggies and will carry a three-stroke advantage ahead of Monday’s final 18 holes.
