Iowa's McCoy Knocks MGA Senior Player of the Year Rose out of U.S. Senior Amateur During Quarters

  EUGENE, Ore. – Following an admirable start to the 2018 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship at Eugene Country Club, including a 20-hole victory over two-time USGA champion Paul Simson during the Round of 32 Tuesday, Minnesotan Jerry Rose fell during the quarterfinal round Wednesday to Iowa’s Michael McCoy, 3 and 2.
 
A pair of early bogeys put Rose behind early Wednesday and he would fall down by three after recording double-bogey at the sixth. Rose took advantage of a McCoy bogey at the seventh, but McCoy carded two birdies at the eighth and 10^th holes to take a commanding 4-up lead.
 
Rose, the 2017 Minnesota Golf Association Senior Men’s Player of the Year, won the 11^th hole with a par, but McCoy answered once again with a birdie at the 12^th to regain a 4-up lead. Rose cut into McCoy’s lead momentarily by winning the 14^th, but the two would each par the 15^th and 16^th holes as McCoy closed out the match with the victory, 3 and 2.
 
Sean Knapp, who won the 2017 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship at The Minikahda Club in Minneapolis, went on to defeat McCoy during the semifinals Wednesday, 2 and 1, and will now have a chance to defend his title when he faces Jeff Wilson during the finals Thursday.
