PORTLAND, Ore. – Despite facing an early deficit after the first hole of her Round of 64 match Monday, Leigh Klasse quickly built a 3-up lead through eight holes over Canadian Sandra Turbide and would cruise to a 4 and 3 victory to advance at the 56th U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at Waverley Country Club.

Klasse advances past the opening round of match play for the first time since 2013 and will face Switzerland’s Evelyn Orley Tuesday at 10:55 a.m. during the Round of 32.

Falling behind early after a bogey on the opening hole Monday, Klasse bounced back by carding a birdie at the par-4 second to draw even and took her first and only lead of the match by winning the third with a par.

Klasse managed to win the par-3 sixth with a bogey before extending her lead to 3-up after converting her birdie look at the eighth. Turbide cut into Klasse’s lead momentarily at the 11th, but the always steady Klasse answered with her third birdie of the match at the 12th.

Taking advantage of a final mistake by Turbide at the 15th, Klasse closed out the match with a par to earn a 4 and 3 victory to advance.

The 56th U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship continues Tuesday with the Round of 32 scheduled to begin at 9:45 a.m. at Waverley Country Club.
