CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Playing in her 10th consecutive U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship this week, Leigh Klasse carded a second-round 78 Sunday to finish 36 holes of stroke play at 4-over 148 to qualify for the match play portion of the championship.

"I hit the ball really well today. I hit 14 greens in regulation and made a few putts,” Klasse said after Saturday’s round.

Fellow Minnesotan Brenda Williams, who earned a spot in the championship as an alternate, fired a 3-over 75 Sunday to finish tied for 38th at 157, also advancing to match play when the championship resumes early Monday.

Klasse, of Cumberland, Wis., fired a 2-under 70 during the opening round Saturday before slipping down the leaderboard Sunday with a round of 78. Klasse bogeyed the opening hole Sunday before a double-bogey at the eighth put her at 1-over for the tournament.

“This is my first time playing [Cedar Rapids]. I’m from the mid-west though so I do like these types of courses. I really like the layout and the course is in great shape. Its hard,” Klasse said.

After finishing her front nine on a high note with a birdie, Klasse carded four bogeys over her final seven holes Sunday to finish tied for fifth at 148. No seeded No. 8 for match play, Klasse will face Georgia’s Cheryl Grigg during the Round of 64 Monday.

Williams, from Minnetrista, Minn., struggled during her opening round Saturday, carding a 10-over 82, but rallied during the final round of stroke play Sunday, heading to her 15th hole at even par for the round before taking double-bogey at her 16th. A bogey on her 17th hole put Williams in the clubhouse with a second-round 75 and into the first round of match play after finishing tied for 38th at 157.

When the Round of 64 begins Monday, Williams will face Floridian Mary Jane Hiestand at 11 a.m.

The 2019 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship continues Monday when the Round of 64 begins at 7:30 a.m. at Cedar Rapids Country Club.
