DETROIT LAKES, Minn. – A string of three birdies late during his round Monday helped Mason Roloff to a round of 6-under 65 to take the early lead at the 95th Minnesota State Junior Boys’ Championship at Detroit Country Club.

When the tournament resumes Tuesday, Roloff will take a one-stroke lead over Braeden Sladek and Ryan Stendahl to the final round.

Beginning the championship on the 10th tee Monday, Roloff rolled in birdies at the 11th and 16th holes to turn in 2-under for the day before carding back-to-back birdies at the first and second holes to open his inward nine, moving to 4-under.

Roloff, who will be a senior at Spring Lake Park High School this fall, took a step back with his only blemish on the scorecard Monday, a bogey at the par-4 fourth. Quickly bouncing back, Roloff strung together three consecutive birdies beginning at the par-4 sixth hole to take the clubhouse lead at 6-under 65.

Sladek began his first round with a birdie on the opening hole, but would play his next 10 holes in even par heading to the 12th. Rolling in his birdie chance at the par-5 12th, Sladek moved to 2-under for the tournament before carding three straight birdies over his final three holes to shoot up the leaderboard and into a tie for second at 5-under 66.

Stendahl got off to a quick start Monday with a birdie at the first before falling back to even with a bogey at the third. Rebounding quickly, Stendahl carded four straight birdies beginning at the par-4 fourth to get to 4-under for the tournament.

Trading a pair of birdies with two bogeys over the first seven holes of his back nine Monday, Stendahl finished on a high note, sinking his birdie chance at the 18th to move into a share of second with Sladek at 5-under 66.

Davis Johnson, Sam Suppes and Kyler Schwamb each posted an opening-round 67 and will begin the final round tied for fourth.

The final round of the 95th Minnesota State Junior Boys’ Championship is scheduled to get underway at 7:30 a.m. at Detroit Country Club.
