Madsen Unfazed During Sweltering Opening Day at Minnesota State Open, Leads By Three

  MAPLE GROVE, Minn. – Carding three birdies during his opening nine Friday, amateur Brady Madsen rolled in three more birdies and an eagle before making bogey on his final hole, posting a 7-under par 65 to take the first-round lead at the 102^nd Minnesota State Open at Rush Creek Golf Club.
 
Madsen, who will begin his junior season at Winona State University this fall, carries a three-stroke lead over six players into Saturday’s second round.
 
Starting his day on the 10^th tee Friday, Madsen sank back-to-back birdies on the first two holes of the round before adding a third at the par-4 17^th, turning in 3-under. After rolling in another pair of birdie chances at the fourth and fifth holes, Madsen would eagle the 348-yard sixth hole to jump to 7-under for the championship.
 
Taking advantage of the par-5 eighth, Madsen moved to 8-under, but was unable to save par on the final hole of the round to shoot a 7-under 65 during the first round of competition.
 
Van Holmgren, who finished runner-up Wednesday at the 116^th Minnesota Golf Association State Amateur at Somerby Golf Club, opened the championship Friday with a round of 4-under 68 to finish the first day of action in a tie for second with former University of Minnesota golfer Matt Rachey, Jeff Sorenson, Eric Rolland, Brian Hills and Tim Brovold.
 
The 102^nd Minnesota State Open resumes Saturday when second-round tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. at Rush Creek Golf Club.
