FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – For the fifth consecutive season, Minnesotans Paige McCullough and Olivia Herrick advanced to the match play portion of the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur. While Herrick fell during her Round of 64 match Monday, McCullough came from behind to win her opening-round match to advance at Forest Highlands Golf Club.

McCullough, from Stillwater, Minn., fired a round of 74 to begin the championship Saturday and followed it with a round of 75 Sunday to finish tied for 28th. Facing Arizona’s Kim Eaton during her first-round match Monday, McCullough fell down by two following Eaton’s birdie at the fifth.

McCullough bounced back by winning the next four straight holes to take a 2-up lead before losing the 10th with a double-bogey. Winning the 12th and 13th holes, McCullough increased her lead to 3-up and would close out the match at the 16th to win, 3 and 2.

The former University of Minnesota golfer will face Megan Buck, from Eaton, Mass., during the Round of 32 Tuesday.

Joining the field as an alternate, Herrick carded a round of 73 to begin the championship Saturday before shooting 79 during the second round of stroke play to finish 36 holes tied for 43rd at 152.

Herrick, from Roseville, Minn., fell down early during her Round of 64 match following a birdie by Katrina Camitoc on the opening hole. Herrick built some momentum by winning the fifth and sixth holes, but Camitoc came back to regain the lead by winning the seventh and eighth holes.

Increasing her lead to 2-up following a birdie at the 12th, Camitoc would close out the match on the 17th hole with a par to defeat Herrick, 3 and 1.

The 2019 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur continues Tuesday when the Round of 32 begins at 9:30 a.m. at Forest Highlands Golf Club.
