McCullough Exits U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur After Round of 32 Loss

September 17, 2019

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Advancing to match play at the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur for the fifth consecutive season Sunday at Forest Highlands Golf Club, Minnesotan Paige McCullough won her opening-round match Monday, but would exit the championship Tuesday after her loss during Round of 32.

McCullough, a former University of Minnesota golfer who lives in Stillwater, Minn., opened the championship by shooting rounds of 74 and 75, respectively, to finish 36 holes of qualifying at 5-over 149 in a tie for 28th.

Advancing from the opening round of match play with a victory over Kim Eaton, McCullough faced Massachusetts’ Megan Buck during the Round of 32 and fell down early following a birdie by Buck on the first hole.

McCullough battled back to even the match at the sixth and proceeded to win two of the next three holes to take a 2-up lead through eight holes. Buck came charging back to win three consecutive holes to regain a 1-up lead before McCullough answered with a birdie at the 14th to pull even.

But a pair of late bogeys at the 16th and 17th holes would give Buck a 2 and 1 victory, eliminating McCullough from competition.
