Peterson Lone Minnesotan to Qualify for Match Play at U.S. Mid-Amateur

October 10, 2017 | 2 min.

MILTON, Ga. – Posting a round of 1-under par 70 Monday, Minnesotan Trent Peterson finished in a tie for 12th place at 142, advancing to match play at the 2017 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at Atlanta National Golf Club.

Peterson, one of six Minnesotans in the field this week, will be the only representative from the state to move on at the championship as Justin Burleson, of Apple Valley, Minn., carded a round of even par 71 to open the championship Saturday before the second round was washed out due to severe weather.

Burleson posted a 7-over par 78 during the second round of stroke play Monday to miss the cut for match play by three shots.

Joe O’Brien, 2015 Minnesota Golf Association Mid-Players’ Champion, began the championship with a round of 75 Saturday and rebounded from a double-bogey late in his round Monday, but despite a birdie on his final hole, O’Brien finished 36 holes of stroke play at 6-over par 137 to miss the cut by one stroke.

A native of Eagan, Minn., Peterson started slowly during his opening round at Capital City Club by shooting 5-over par 40 on his front nine before bouncing back with three birdies over his final nine to salvage an opening-round 72.

Playing Atlanta National Golf Club during Monday’s second round, Peterson found his usual consistency by carding nine consecutive pars to open the round before recording two birdies and one bogey over his final nine to finish 36 holes tied for 12th at 142.

Peterson, seeded No. 13 for match play, is scheduled to begin the Round of 64 at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday against an opponent yet to be determined. A 26-way playoff for the final 16 spots in the match play bracket will begin at 7 a.m. Tuesday.
