MAPLE PLAIN, Minn. – Opening the 2022-2023 season with its only appearance on home soil, the University of Minnesota men’s golf team carded a first-round team score of 281 and followed it by shooting a combined 283 during the second round Sunday at Windsong Farm, finishing the first 36 holes of the 2022 Gopher Invitational in ninth place.

The Gophers were paced by senior Antoine Sale, who fired back-to-back rounds of 2-under 69 Sunday to sit inside the top-10, five shots off the lead.

Sale, from Chateau D’Oleron, France, bounced back from an early bogey during his opening nine of the second round by carding birdies at the seventh and ninth holes to turn in 1-under for the round.

After drawing even with a bogey at the 11th, Sale finished his first two rounds of the season with back-to-back birdies at the 16th and 17th to post a second straight round of 69.

Fellow senior Harrison Arnold carded a 1-under 70 during Sunday’s opening round and followed it by shooting even par 71 during Sunday’s second 18 holes. He will begin Monday’s final round tied for 33rd with newcomer Jacob Pedersen.

Pedersen, a graduate student transfer from Gustavus Adolphus College, posted a 1-over 72 during the morning session Sunday before his bogey-free round of 69 during the afternoon tilt.

Behind Xavier Marcoux and Rhett Sellers Sunday, Rutgers University jumped out in front of the field at 15-under 553 to lead Michigan State University by three strokes ahead of Monday’s final round.

Marcoux and Sellers sit on top of a crowded individual leaderboard, sharing the 36-hole lead with Coastal Carolina University’s Garrett Cooper and Furman University’s Will Morlan at 8-under 134.

Other local players in the field this week include 2022 Minnesota Golf Association Players’ Champion Cecil Belisle, who is playing his first season at the University of Kansas, and fellow Jayhawk newcomer, and former Minnetonka High School standout Gunnar Broin.

Belisle and Broin currently sit tied for 21st at 2-under 140.

Making his collegiate debut for the University of Notre Dame this week, former Northfield High School golfer Nate Stevens carded a 3-over 74 during the early round Sunday, but complimented it with a round of 3-under 68 during the second round. Stevens, who received the 2022 Mr. Golf Minnesota Award at Windsong Farm in June, will begin the final round tied for 38th at 3-under 142.

The final round of the 2022 Gopher Invitational will begin at 7:15 a.m. Monday at Windsong Farm.
