Sigel, Frazzini Share Preview Lead with 71's; Wayzata Is the Team Leader

BROOKLYN PARK -- Ben Sigel started the 2016 high school season ranked No. 1, held the top spot all spring and capped off his junior year at Minnetonka with a victory in the Class AAA portion of the state tournament. 

It's a new year, and Sigel is No. 2 in the MGA Rankings, behind AA champ Blake's Ian Hitchner, who set a state tournament with his score of 65-69--134. But the Minnetonka senior looked upwardly mobile on Friday at Edinburgh USA in the first round of the Preview (formerly the Tri-State). Sigel shot a 1-under-par 71 and is tied for the lead with Wayzata senior Ben Frazzini. 

Connor Glynn of Waconia is one stroke behind, in third place. Right behind him is a gang of six at 73 -- Ian Mackenzie Olson (Wayzata), Brady Arnett (St. Thomas Academy), Tanner Sperling (Lakeville South), John Langlois (Lakeville South), Paul Stankey (Providence Academy) and Justin Tanquist (Chaska).  There are three players tied for 10th at 74, followed by another sixsome at 75, including Hitchner's Blake teammate Reece Sanders, who won this tournament a year ago. 

Hitchner shot 77 and is tied for 23rd. 

With Frazzini leading the way, Wayzata posted a team total of 296 and leads the team competition by three over Lakeville South. Sigel and Minnetonka are third in the 20-team field, five behind at 301. No one else is within 10 shots of Wayzata. 

Sigel and Frazzini will begin their final round Saturday at 1:35 p.m.
