ORMOND BEACH, Fla. -- Ellen Hume birdied four of the first five holes at Oceanside Country Club on Friday on the way to a 1-under-par 71 that lifted her into first place in the venerable Sally Atlantic Women's Amateur Championship. Her start on Saturday wasn't nearly as good -- she bogeyed three of the first seven holes -- but she played the next nine holes in 2 under and then finished in spectacular fashion, with an eagle on the par-5 17th and a birdie on the 18th.
The result was a 3-under-par 69 and 72-hole total of 283. That gave the University of Mississippi junior a five-shot victory.
Bailey Shoemaker, a 15-year-old prodigy from New York (she's committed to USC for 2023), bounced back from a third-round 77 with a 72 on Saturday. That was good for a 288 and sole ownership of second place.
Cindy Kou also shot a closing 72 and finished third at 289.
Hume, a native of Whitehall, England, is No. 194 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings -- but with a bullet. She tied for medalist honors in the East Lake Cup during the fall portion of the college season, and in December she was second in the Women's Dixie Amateur.
Shoemaker opened with a 69 and followed it with a 70, which put her in first place after 36 holes. In second at that point was Kate Smith, a fifth-year senior at Nebraska -- and the 2020 MGA Women's Co-Player of the Year (she shared the honor with Taylor Ledwein). The former five-time Minnesota state high school champion from Detroit Lakes shot 72 in the first round, then moved up with a 69 in the second. But she had a disastrous 7-over-in-seven-holes stretch on the back nine Friday, and finished the third round with an 80, dropping her from second to a tie for 11th.
She closed with a 77 on Saturday, which put her at 298 overall, and in 12th place.
