Snyder Edges Borgen for Fourth Minnesota PGA Match Play Win

September 30, 2020 | 1 min.

BYRON, Minn. – A pair of birdies over his final nine holes helped professional Brent Snyder to a victory over Chris Borgen at the 51st Minnesota PGA Match Play Championship Tuesday at Somerby Golf Club, collecting his fourth championship win since 2010.

In 19 official events during the 2020 season, Snyder has five victories and finished outside of the top-10 only once, while amassing over $14,000 in winnings.

With his win Tuesday, Snyder ties Bill Israelson for the third most wins at the event, one behind Don Berry’s five championship wins, while George Shortridge remains the tournament’s winningest player with eight victories.

Never trailed during the final match against Borgen Tuesday, Snyder found himself tied through 10 holes before taking the lead for good with a birdie at the 11th hole. Taking advantage of a Borgen bogey at the 12th, Snyder extended his lead before applying pressure when his birdie chance was conceded at the par-4 15th.

Snyder bogeyed the 16th as his lead was trimmed to two, but closed out the match at the 17th with a par to earn the victory, 2 and 1.

During the season-long event, which began in late June, Snyder began his championship run by defeating Hazeltine National Golf Club head professional Chandler Withington, 5 and 4, before cruising to victory over Ryan Hanford during the Round of 32, 6 and 5.

Facing Ty Armstrong during the Round of 16, Snyder had little trouble coming away with victory, 6 and 5, before downing Jim Leary during the quarterfinal round, 3 and 2.

On Tuesday, Snyder edged Steve Fessler, 1-up, to reach the final match against Borgen, who earlier had dispatched Eric Rolland to reach the final round.
